The remains of charcoal are called chaff. Many recent research papers, Brazilian and foreign, have evaluated the use of plant-based charcoal as a soil conditioner, in order to increase the organic matter content and the ability to exchange the soil cation, improve efficiency in the use of fertilizers to promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms on plant growth, among other agronomically desirable characteristics.
